Ward quote on 2/12Interesting story/quote on Thursday 2/11...full story linked....any speculation?....this is somewhat exciting to me!
"I'm looking at some possibilities to get back into it, maybe in a different series, like [the NASCAR Truck Series], where I could have fun off-track activities with the on-track." Said Ward Burton.
"I've had some interesting calls the last couple of weeks, but they weren't quite there."
He speculated that he might return to racing later this year, or in 2010. Noting that racing is a career while conservation and hunting are passions, Burton noted that his on-track notoriety has put him in a position to promote the outdoors.

I would love to see Ward in a truck every week.

Ward was made for the trucks. Why does he need an offer? Why not just start his own team. I'm sure Tim Peters would give him a few pointers about running independent.

I'd love to see Ward run a truck, but if he gets a ride and still sucks then wrists may be cut.
The 27 BGN ride didn't turn out to good. Maybe it's best if he just stays away.

Everyone's wondered why he wouldn't give trucks a chance, other than ego, and maybe being out of the whole thing for a while has changed him in that aspect, but as far as building his own team, I don't think Ward enjoys anything related to the aspect of racing that goes under the heading of "ownership responsibilities". I think it was pretty clear he doesn't want to hang around the track, doesn't want to do the schmooze to get the deals, doesn't want to be involved in the non-driver parts of any of it. He couldn't even be bothered to find a sponsor when he had rides waiting, why would he suddenly make a good owner? I can't picture him wanting to be involved in hiring a team, scouting locations for a shop, securing leases on buildings and equipment, etc. It's just not him.
He participated in off-track activities as much as he had to and always used them to the benefit of his other interests and foundation when possible (and appropriate). But he was hardly a track rat or a sponsor booth animal. Having to do what an owner has to do with sponsors and manufacturers and team members (i.e., employees) just seems totally incongruous with his nature.
Honestly, I don't know what Ward enjoys about the sport other than getting in the car and pushing down the pedal, and using the big bucks to fund his real passions. He never even seemed comfortable giving driving feedback if it needed to be more on the technical side. I'm sure that's part of why he has such a loyal following - no bull, no marketing hype, no perfect image for the press conference - but I think it also means he is not cut out of owner cloth.
He just needs to find another ride with Tommy, whatever class and vehicle type it is. Let Tommy handle the other stuff, while deciphering his feedback and making the changes that make sense to that driver so he can just wheel it on around.

I don't know. He has no problem e-mailing me every couple of months asking for money for Jeb.

Must you be such a naysayer? The man finished 6th. Clearly he's poised to win the whole thing this year!!

Just keep sending those checks to WBWF so I can hang out in the woods instead of lowering myself to race a truck.
